Mtskheta, Gori & Uplistsikhe — Private Day Trip from Tbilisi
A private day trip from Tbilisi to Georgia's old capital, a town cut from rock and Stalin's birthplace. You see Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta (UNESCO World Heritage), walk the rock-cut streets of Uplistsikhe above the Mtkvari, and visit the Stalin Museum in Gori. Jvari looks down on the meeting of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, the view Lermontov put into his poem Mtsyri. Svetitskhoveli was built in the 11th century on the site of Georgia's first church. Uplistsikhe was lived in from the Early Iron Age to the Middle Ages, and your guide gives honest context to the Gori museum's admiring portrait of Stalin. It is a 9–9.5 hour day with short drives. The only rough walking is on Uplistsikhe's uneven rock. Entrance tickets are included; lunch is not.
