Overview

A private hiking day trip from Tbilisi to Juta, a village at about 2,200 m in the Sno valley near Kazbegi, under the jagged Chaukhi peaks. With a local hiking guide you walk past the Fifth Season hut and up the valley towards Juta lake: about 10–12 km return with 360–400 m of climbing, 3–4 hours. Your driver-guide takes you over the Jvari Pass to Sno, about 3 hours from Tbilisi, where a local 4x4 takes over. The last 2.6 km of road below Juta has been closed since part of it collapsed in June 2025; while it stays closed, a village taxi takes you past the closure. The path is well trodden, with one short steep climb to the hut. It is a 12-hour day with about 6 hours of driving, so we don't add Gergeti or Stepantsminda to it. For a gentler pace, stay overnight in Kazbegi instead.

Itinerary

Sno valley and the Juta walk

A 12-hour day: about 3 hours' drive each way between Tbilisi and Sno, then local transport up to Juta and a 3–4 hour walk.

  1. Pickup in Tbilisi; drive the Military Highway via Ananuri and the Jvari Pass

  2. Sno village; local 4x4 up the valley, then a village taxi past the closed last 2.6 km into Juta (about 45 min in all)

      Juta is a small mountain village at about 2,200 m at the head of the Sno valley, south-east of Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), under the jagged Chaukhi massif (3,842 m), often called the Georgian Dolomites. From the village an easy path climbs through meadows past the Fifth Season hut towards the foot of the peaks: about 10–12 km return with 360–400 m of climbing. Since a road collapse in June 2025, the last 2.6 km of road below the village has been closed, so you finish the approach on foot or by village taxi. Go from July to September.

Moderate fitness level required. Includes longer walks, some uphill sections, and possibly uneven terrain.

Road status
the last 2.6 km of the Sno–Juta road has been closed since a collapse in June 2025; we check the current status before your date. If the taxi is not running, the closed stretch is a 40–90 minute walk each way, which makes the day longer.

What to bring
hiking shoes, a warm and waterproof layer (Juta is at about 2,200 m and much cooler than Tbilisi), sun cream and cash for drinks at the hut.
Pace
about 6 hours in the car plus 1.5 hours in local vehicles; if that is too much, a night in Kazbegi splits the day.
Heads-up
the Military Highway occasionally closes for a few hours after mudflows or storms, even in summer; we watch the forecast and move the date if needed.
