About This Experience

A day walk in the Sno valley near Kazbegi, under the jagged Chaukhi peaks. Your driver-guide takes you from Tbilisi to Sno, where a local 4x4 drives the damaged road up to Juta village. From there a local hiking guide walks with you towards the Fifth Season hut and the Chaukhi view: about 10–12 km return with 360–400 m of climbing, 3–4 hours on an easy trail. It is a 12-hour day, and we don't combine it with the standard Kazbegi and Gergeti tour because that makes the day too long. Runs July to mid-September, when the trail is clear of snow.

    Sno valley and the Juta walk

    A 12-hour day: about 3.5 hours each way to Sno, then 4x4 and a 3–4 hour walk.

    • 08:00 Pickup in Tbilisi; drive the Military Highway via Ananuri and the Jvari Pass
    • 11:00 Sno village; local 4x4 up the damaged road to Juta (about 40 min)
    • 11:45–15:30 Walk towards the Fifth Season hut and the Chaukhi view with a hiking guide; picnic or hut lunch (not included)
    • 16:00 4x4 back to Sno; drive to Tbilisi

The Military Highway to Kazbegi with a detour most day trips skip: the Truso valley, reached by 4x4 on a dirt road from Kvemo Okrokana. You walk about 4 km among mineral springs, orange-white travertine terraces and abandoned towers, then drive on to Stepantsminda and up to Gergeti Trinity Church (2,170 m). Raft the White Aragvi at Pasanauri, about 90 km north of Tbilisi on the Military Highway, with a licensed local rafting company, and stop at Ananuri fortress on the way. The run from Pasanauri to Meneso is about 12 km. In May and June the river runs high (grade III, 25–40 minutes on the water) and suits confident adults who can swim. From July it drops to grade II (40–60 minutes) and suits families with children from about 7. The rafting company provides a skipper, raft, helmet, life jacket and wetsuit. After a khinkali lunch in Pasanauri you can add a tandem paragliding flight at Gudauri if the wind allows. About 9 hours door to door; your travel insurance must cover rafting.

Three active days on one mountain road north of Tbilisi. Day one: rafting the White Aragvi at Pasanauri with a licensed crew, a stop at Ananuri, and the first paragliding slot at Gudauri if the wind allows. Day two: a guided hike in the Juta valley (July–September) or the Truso valley (May–June and September), reached by local 4x4. Day three: Gergeti Trinity at sunrise and a tandem paragliding flight at Gudauri with a licensed pilot before the drive back. Flights depend on the weather, so there are two slots; if neither flies we refund the flight. We never plan the flight for the day before your international departure. Two nights in Stepantsminda are included. This is soft adventure: no experience needed, but insurance must cover rafting and paragliding.
