Most of the places people come to Georgia for are a day's drive from Tbilisi: the Kazbegi mountains, the Kakheti wine villages, the old capital Mtskheta and the rock-cut towns of Uplistsikhe and Vardzia. Every trip on this page is private. You have your own car or minivan and driver-guide, we pick you up from your hotel in central Tbilisi, and you decide how long to stay at each stop.

Prices are per person for a group of 4, the way every tour page shows them. Two travellers pay more each, because the car and guide are shared by fewer people; larger groups pay less. Nothing to pay now: send us your date and we confirm it first.

North on the Georgian Military Highway: Ananuri fortress above the Zhinvali reservoir, the Gudauri panorama at the Friendship Monument, then over the 2,379 m Jvari (Cross) Pass to Stepantsminda, the town most people call Kazbegi. It is 152 km and about 3–3.5 hours each way. The high point is the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170 m, with Mt Kazbek (5,054 m) behind it when the cloud lifts.

Good to know: From December to April the Jvari Pass can close for a few hours or a day or two after snow. We check the road the evening before and suggest another route if it is shut.

East to Kakheti, 1.5–2.5 hours from Tbilisi, where Georgia's qvevri winemaking (UNESCO-listed since 2013) is strongest today. You walk the walls of Sighnaghi above the Alazani Valley, visit Bodbe convent, where St Nino is buried, and taste at the Tsinandali estate, whose wine library holds bottles back to 1814.

Good to know: The Tsinandali house-museum is closed on Mondays, so the route changes on a Monday. Lunch is not included; your guide can book a table.

Mtskheta, the old capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is 30–40 minutes from Tbilisi: Jvari Monastery above the meeting of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in the town below. Then west to Uplistsikhe, a town cut into the rock above the Mtkvari, and the Stalin Museum in Gori.

Good to know: Uplistsikhe has no shade and is hot in July and August, so it comes before lunch. Opening days at the Stalin Museum vary between sources, so we check before a Monday trip.

David Gareja Monastery & Sighnaghi — Private Day Trip from Tbilisi

South-east into the semi-desert to the David Gareja Lavra, a working monastery cut into the cliff, about 1.5–2 hours from Tbilisi with a rough last stretch. Then north-east across Kakheti to Bodbe convent and the walls of Sighnaghi for the evening light.

Good to know: The ridge-top Udabno caves sit on an undemarcated border and close without notice, so they are 'if open on the day'. July and August are very hot, and vipers are about from May to September: wear closed shoes.

Vardzia, the cave monastery begun under King George III and completed under Queen Tamar in the late 12th century, is 4–5 hours from Tbilisi. The day adds Borjomi's park and the Khertvisi fortress above the Mtkvari.

Good to know: Since a rockfall on 27 May 2026 about half of Vardzia is closed and visitors return the way they came. There is no reopening date yet, so we confirm what is open before you book.

White Aragvi Rafting & Ananuri Fortress — Private Day Trip from Tbilisi

Rafting on the White Aragvi near Pasanauri, about 1.5–2 hours north of Tbilisi on the Military Highway, with Ananuri fortress on the way up and Mtskheta on the way back. The time on the water is 40–75 minutes.

Good to know: In April–June the river runs high (class II–III); from July it is an easy float that suits children from about 7. Check that your insurance covers rafting.

Birtvisi is a medieval fortress hidden among the rock towers of the Algeti gorge, about 1.5 hours from Tbilisi. A loop of 4–5 hours of hiking and easy scrambling takes you up to it. It held out for centuries and fell to Timur in 1403, after eight assaults.

Good to know: You use your hands on the steep sections, without ropes. Not after rain, when the rock is slippery.

Your own guide through the Old Town: Metekhi Church, the cable car up to Narikala fortress, the sulphur-bath domes of Abanotubani, Shardeni Street, Sioni Cathedral and the Bridge of Peace.

Good to know: The Old Town is steep and cobbled, so wear comfortable shoes. In July–August we start early.

Only one day? How to choose

  • Mountains: Kazbegi. It is the longest of the classic days (10–12 hours) and the one people remember, but in December–April check the road first.
  • Wine and villages: Kakheti. Easy roads, a relaxed pace, and it runs all year.
  • History with the least driving: Mtskheta, Gori and Uplistsikhe.
  • Something different: David Gareja's semi-desert in spring or autumn, or Vardzia if you don't mind a 12–14 hour day.

How far is Kazbegi from Tbilisi?

Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) is 152 km from Tbilisi on the Georgian Military Highway, about 3–3.5 hours each way without stops. With stops at Ananuri, Gudauri and Gergeti Trinity Church, a day trip takes 10–12 hours.

Is the road to Kazbegi open in winter?

Most days, yes. Between December and April the Jvari Pass (2,379 m) can close for a few hours or a day or two after heavy snow. Nobody can promise the road for a date weeks ahead, so we check it the evening before your trip. How winter closures work

How much does a private day trip from Tbilisi cost?

The trips on this page cost $43–$129 per person for a group of 4, with your own car and driver-guide. The per-person price is higher for 1–3 travellers and lower for 5–8. Each tour page lists what is and isn't included.

Which day trips run all year?

Kakheti, Mtskheta–Gori–Uplistsikhe and the Tbilisi city tour run all year. Kazbegi runs all year with the winter road caveat. David Gareja and Vardzia run March to November, rafting late April to early October.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. Since 1 January 2026 health insurance with at least 30,000 GEL of cover is mandatory for visitors to Georgia. If you plan to raft or hike, check that your policy covers it.
