About This Experience

The classic Svaneti trek, with the logistics handled. After the train and a night in Mestia, you walk 57 km in four days from Mestia to Ushguli through the villages of Zhabeshi, Adishi and Iprali with a local mountain guide, sleeping in family guesthouses with half board. There is about 3,100 m of total ascent, and the high point is about 2,700 m on the Chkhutnieri pass. On day four you ford the Adishi river early in the morning, or ride across on a local's horse. A car collects you in Ushguli and, in season, drives you out over the Zagari pass to Kutaisi. The trek is well marked but long and steep in places, so you need to be fit and to have walked 5–7 hours a day before.

Tour to Mestia, a mountain town with medieval towers in the snowy Caucasus
2

Mestia

Set high in the Caucasus, Mestia is the heart of Svaneti, where stone defensive towers built between the 9th and 13th centuries still rise above the rooftops. The isolation that once protected the fiercely independent Svans also preserved a living culture you can still hear in their polyphonic singing and taste at a hearty feast. Spend your days exploring the Svaneti Museum and Margiani House, walking to the Chalaadi Glacier, or skiing at Hatsvali, with the ancient village of Ushguli 47 km away.

Zhabeshi
3

A remote Svan village with medieval towers below the Adishi glacier, the second overnight stop on the Mestia-Ushguli trek. The next morning the trail fords the Adishi river before climbing to the Chkhutnieri pass, the high point of the trek at about 2,700 m.

6

Ushguli

Among the highest permanently inhabited villages in Europe, at about 2,100 meters, UNESCO-listed Ushguli sits deep in the Caucasus, where centuries-old Svan defensive towers still rise above the stone houses. The Svan people keep their own language, customs and polyphonic singing alive here, and the village opens onto walks toward the Shkhara Glacier below Georgia's highest peak (5,193 meters). Reached from Mestia on a sealed road and best in summer, it pairs medieval atmosphere with hearty Svan fare like kubdari.

7

Kutaisi

Once the capital of ancient Colchis, the kingdom Jason crossed the sea to reach for the Golden Fleece, Kutaisi pairs deep history with the limestone country around it. See the 12th-century frescoes and mosaics of UNESCO-listed Gelati Monastery, the 11th-century Bagrati Cathedral above the city, the stalactite chambers of Prometheus Cave, and the preserved dinosaur footprints at Sataplia Nature Reserve. Cap it with Imeretian cooking: sulguni cheese, mchadi cornbread, and a true Georgian supra.

Caucasus 4x4: Tusheti, Khevsureti & Kazbegi — 8-Day Private Expedition

Round trip (6–14 days)
Mountains
+1

Eight days in the three mountain regions of Georgia where you really need a 4x4: Kazbegi's Truso or Juta valley, Khevsureti with the fortress villages of Shatili and Mutso over the Datvisjvari pass, and Tusheti over the Abano pass (about 2,850 m). There is no road between Khevsureti and Tusheti, so the route returns to a night in Telavi between them. Our own 4x4 with an English-speaking driver-guide (Russian-speaking on request) covers days 1–5 and the drive home from Kvemo Alvani on day 8; for Tusheti a local licensed jeep driver takes over, because only local drivers drive the Abano road, and only in daylight and dry weather. Nights are in hotels in Stepantsminda and Telavi and in mountain guesthouses with half board in Shatili and Tusheti. Days 3 and 5 are long mountain drives. July to 20 September; we recommend a spare day before your flight home.

Kazbegi Adventure Weekend: Rafting, Hiking & Paragliding — 3 Days, Private

Short trip (2–5 days)
Active & adventure
+1

Three active days on one mountain road north of Tbilisi. Day one: rafting the White Aragvi at Pasanauri with a licensed crew, a stop at Ananuri, and the first paragliding slot at Gudauri if the wind allows. Day two: a guided hike in the Juta valley (July–September) or the Truso valley (May–June and September), reached by local 4x4. Day three: Gergeti Trinity at sunrise and a tandem paragliding flight at Gudauri with a licensed pilot before the drive back. Flights depend on the weather, so there are two slots; if neither flies we refund the flight. We never plan the flight for the day before your international departure. Two nights in Stepantsminda are included. This is soft adventure: no experience needed, but insurance must cover rafting and paragliding.

Juta Valley Hike under the Chaukhi Peaks — Private Day Trip from Tbilisi

Day trip from Tbilisi
Mountains
+1

A day walk in the Sno valley near Kazbegi, under the jagged Chaukhi peaks. Your driver-guide takes you from Tbilisi to Sno, where a local 4x4 drives the damaged road up to Juta village. From there a local hiking guide walks with you towards the Fifth Season hut and the Chaukhi view: about 10–12 km return with 360–400 m of climbing, 3–4 hours on an easy trail. It is a 12-hour day, and we don't combine it with the standard Kazbegi and Gergeti tour because that makes the day too long. Runs July to mid-September, when the trail is clear of snow.
