About This Experience

During Rtveli, the grape harvest, we take you to a family winery in Kakheti. You help pick grapes in the morning, tread or press them in the traditional way, and see the must go into the qvevri. Then you sit down to a harvest lunch with the family, with toasts led by the host, and visit a second winery for a tasting before a sunset stop in Sighnaghi. Harvest days depend on the weather and the ripeness of each vineyard, so the date is flexible: the host confirms it 7–10 days ahead. About 11.5 hours door to door. Children are welcome in the vineyard; tastings and chacha are for adults only.

Kakheti is Georgia's main wine region, 1.5–2 hours east of Tbilisi, and the place where clay-qvevri winemaking (UNESCO intangible heritage since 2013) is strongest today. With your own driver-guide you visit Bodbe convent, walk the 18th-century walls of Sighnaghi above the Alazani Valley, and taste at two very different places: the Tsinandali estate, whose 1830s winery and enoteca hold bottles back to 1814, and a small family qvevri cellar. Both tastings are included; lunch is not, but your guide can book a table with a valley view. You come back over the Gombori pass. Expect a 10–10.5 hour day with about 5 hours of driving. A day with a village family in Kakheti. You bake bread in the tone, the family's clay oven; fold khinkali; and dip churchkhela, the walnut sweet strung on thread and dipped in thickened grape juice. Then you share lunch around the family table and visit one winery on the way back. Adults can watch chacha being distilled and taste it; under-18s don't take part in the chacha tasting. It is a relaxed 9.5-hour day with no hiking and suits families. Churchkhela is most traditional in autumn, but the family makes it all year.

Georgian Supra & Polyphonic Singing — Private Evening from Tbilisi

A family feast rather than a restaurant show. We drive you to a family house or wine cellar near Tbilisi or Mtskheta for a supra, the traditional Georgian feast led by a tamada (toastmaster). A group of three or four local singers performs Georgian polyphonic song, which UNESCO has recognised since 2001, between the toasts. Dinner and house wine are included, and your guide explains the toasts as they come. About 4 hours, with pickup and drop-off at your Tbilisi hotel. It works well as the last evening of a longer trip.
