You stop at Ananuri fortress above the Zhinvali reservoir and at the Friendship Monument viewpoint past Gudauri, then cross the Jvari Pass (2,379 m) to Stepantsminda, the town most people still call Kazbegi. It is 152 km and about 3–3.5 hours each way. The high point is the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170 m, with Mt Kazbek (5,054 m) behind it when the cloud lifts. From May to October our car drives the sealed road up to the church; in snow we switch to a local 4x4. Plan on an 11–12 hour day. In winter the Jvari Pass can close for hours or a day or two after snow, so we check the road the evening before and have a Plan B.

In Dedoplistskaro we pick up the free Border Police permit for the Alazani river area and pay the park fees, then drive to Pantishara canyon and the Takhti-Tepa mud volcanoes and on to the park bungalows at Mijniskure. Day two covers Eagle canyon and the old Shiraki airfield before the 170 km drive back. The road runs from Zhinvali through Barisakho; beyond Korsha it is a mountain dirt road that needs a 4x4, and the drive to Shatili takes at least 4–5 hours. You stay the night at a guesthouse in Shatili, a fortress village of stone towers, with dinner and breakfast included. On day two you walk 20–30 minutes up a steep path to restored Mutso, see the stone crypts at Anatori, and drive back to Tbilisi by about 19:00. Late June to September only, when the pass is open. We don't sell this as a one-day trip, which would take about 16 hours.

Next to Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, this spa town has drawn visitors to its mineral springs since it became a fashionable retreat of the Russian Empire, when the Romanovs built a summer palace at nearby Likani.
