Day Trips from Batumi

Your own car and English-speaking driver-guide, 1–8 travellers

Batumi is Georgia's Black Sea city, and the green hills behind it are a short drive away. The waterfalls and medieval stone bridges of mountain Adjara start about 30 km inland, the Roman fortress at Gonio is 12 km down the coast, and the Mtirala rainforest is 40 minutes up the hills. Every trip on this page is private. You have your own car and driver-guide, we pick you up from your Batumi hotel, and you decide how long to stay at each stop.

Prices are per person for a group of 4, the way every tour page shows them. Two travellers pay more each, because the car and guide are shared by fewer people; larger groups pay less. Nothing to pay now: send us your date and we confirm it first.

Mountain Adjara Waterfalls & Old Bridges — Private Day Trip from Batumi

Hours
About 6.5 h
Season
Year-round; greenest May–Oct
Per person (4)
$79 pp for 4

Inland along the Acharistskali river: the viewpoint where it meets the Chorokhi, the Makhuntseti waterfall and Queen Tamar's medieval arched bridge about 30 km from Batumi, then the iron footbridge and waterfall at Mirveti. Lunch with wine is at a family restaurant in the Machakhela valley: borano, sinori and Adjarian khachapuri.

Good to know: Paths near the waterfalls are wet and slippery, so wear shoes with grip. In a dry August the waterfalls are thinner; after rain they are at their fullest.

A long day east: caves and canyons near Kutaisi

Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon are near Kutaisi, about 150 km from Batumi. Our day trip starts in Kutaisi. From Batumi the same day takes 12–13 hours, so many people stay a night in Kutaisi; or ask us for a Batumi start and we send the price.

Places near Batumi

Not every place has a fixed tour. Gonio, the Botanical Garden, Mtirala and the Chorokhi delta fit into a day with your own driver: tell us which you'd like and we send a route and a price.

Mountainous Adjara (Makhuntseti)

About 30 km (40 min) inland

Mountainous Adjara starts where the Acharistskali river cuts through forested ridges towards Keda: the Makhuntseti waterfall beside the road, Queen Tamar's arched stone bridge and the waterfall and swaying footbridge at Mirveti. It is the day trip at the top of this page.

Gonio Fortress

12 km south of Batumi

Gonio (Apsaros) is a Roman fortress near the mouth of the Chorokhi river, its rectangular walls and 18 towers still standing. Inside are excavated baths and barracks, a small museum and a grave that local tradition links to the Apostle Matthias. Allow 1–1.5 hours, then the beach at Gonio is a few minutes away.

Batumi Botanical Garden

9 km north, at Green Cape

111 hectares of coastal hills, founded in 1912 and laid out by regions of the world, from the Caucasian subtropics to East Asia and the Himalayas, with views over the sea. The main route takes 2–3 hours on foot; an electric car covers the longer stretches.

Mtirala National Park

About 30 km (40 min)

Colchic rainforest in the hills behind Chakvi. Its name means 'crying', after rainfall of up to about 4,500 mm a year. A marked trail follows the river through boxwood and ivy to a waterfall and a small gorge lake: half a day, in waterproof boots. The season is May to October.

Chorokhi Delta

About 5 km south, past the airport

The mouth of the Chorokhi on the Black Sea and the main birdwatching site on the coast, with waders, herons and terns on migration in April–May and August–October. There are no paths or facilities: you walk the gravel banks with binoculars for 2–3 hours.

Prometheus Cave

Near Kutaisi, about 150 km away

Six lit halls of stalactites and stalagmites on a 1.4 km guided route. It stays around 14 °C all year, and a boat ride on the underground river ends the visit when the water allows.

Martvili Canyon

Near Kutaisi, on the same day trip

A narrow limestone gorge with turquoise pools: a 700 m paved loop over two bridges, and a short boat ride up between the cliffs when the water allows.

Further from Batumi, on request

These routes have no fixed tour, and we drive them with your own car and driver-guide whenever you like. Tell us the date and the stops you want, and we send the price.

Batumi to Tbilisi, sightseeing on the way

About 370 km, 6 hours of driving

A one-way day that ends at your Tbilisi hotel, with your luggage in the car. Choose two or three stops: Kutaisi's Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery, the cave town of Uplistsikhe near Gori, or Mtskheta just before Tbilisi. With stops it is a long day of 11–13 hours.

Kutaisi: Gelati, Bagrati and Motsameta

About 150 km, 2.5 hours each way

Georgia's old royal capital: Gelati Monastery and its mosaics (a UNESCO site), Bagrati Cathedral above the river and the cliff-top Motsameta monastery, with the market in the centre for lunch. Back in Batumi after about 10–11 hours, or stay the night and see the caves and canyons the next day.

Svaneti: Mestia and Ushguli

About 250 km via Zugdidi, 5–6 hours

Too far for a day: plan two or three. The first day drives up the Enguri gorge to Mestia and its medieval stone towers, the second goes on to Ushguli under Shkhara, Georgia's highest peak, about 1.5 hours further on a mountain road.

Borjomi

About 280 km via Kutaisi, 4.5 hours

The spa town of the mineral water, its park and the forested gorge of the Mtkvari. A long return day from Batumi; better as a stop on the way to Vardzia or to Tbilisi.

Longer tours that include Batumi

With Tbilisi and Kutaisi, Batumi is one of the three cities a tour can start or end in. These tours all visit it.

Questions travellers ask

How much does a private day trip from Batumi cost?

Day trips that start in Batumi cost $79 per person for a group of 4, with your own car and driver-guide. The per-person price is higher for 1–3 travellers and lower for 5–8. Each tour page lists what is and isn't included.

How far is the Makhuntseti waterfall from Batumi?

About 30 km, or 40 minutes on the paved Batumi–Akhaltsikhe road. The mountain Adjara day trip adds Queen Tamar's bridge, Mirveti and a family lunch, and takes about 6.5 hours from hotel to hotel.

Can I see Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon in a day from Batumi?

Yes, but it is a long day of 12–13 hours, because both are near Kutaisi, about 150 km away. Our day trip starts in Kutaisi: ask us for a Batumi start, or stay a night in Kutaisi and go from there.

When should I go?

Mountain Adjara and Mtirala are greenest from May to October, and the waterfalls are fullest after rain. The sea is warm enough to swim from June to September. Adjara is one of the wettest parts of Georgia in every season, so pack a rain jacket.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. Since 1 January 2026 health insurance with at least 30,000 GEL of cover is mandatory for visitors to Georgia.
