The short answer: for mountains, go to Kazbegi (11–12 hours); for wine, Kakheti (about 10 hours); for history with little driving, Mtskheta, Gori and Uplistsikhe (about 9 hours). If you have only half a day, Mtskheta with a tasting at Château Mukhrani fits into a morning. The longer trips, Vardzia and Armenia, are worth it for the right traveller, but they are long days. Below is each one with realistic hours, season and who it suits.
At a glance
- Kazbegi: 11–12 h, 152 km each way. May–October; in winter the Jvari Pass can close.
- Kakheti wine country: 10–10.5 h. All year; September–October is harvest.
- Mtskheta, Gori, Uplistsikhe: 9–9.5 h. All year.
- David Gareja and Sighnaghi: 10–11 h. Spring and autumn.
- Vardzia and Borjomi: 13.5–14 h. April–October.
- Northern Armenia: about 11 h, with a border crossing. All year.
- Mtskheta and Château Mukhrani: 5.5–6 h. All year.
Kazbegi: mountains and Gergeti Trinity
The Georgian Military Highway runs north past the Zhinvali reservoir, Ananuri fortress and Gudauri, over the Jvari Pass (2,379 m) to Stepantsminda. From there you go up to Gergeti Trinity Church (2,170 m) under Mt Kazbek (5,054 m). It is 152 km and 3–3.5 hours each way, so the day is 11–12 hours.
Suits: first-time visitors, photographers, anyone who wants to see the Caucasus. Not ideal: travellers who get carsick on mountain roads, or anyone flying out the next morning in winter. From December to April the pass can close for hours or a day or two after snow; see how winter closures work. Our private Kazbegi and Gergeti day trip drives you up to the church in season.
Kakheti: wine, Sighnaghi and Tsinandali
East over the hills to Bodbe convent, where St Nino is buried, and the walled town of Sighnaghi above the Alazani Valley, then the Tsinandali estate and a family cellar that makes wine in qvevri. About 110 km and 1.5–2 hours to Sighnaghi.
Suits: wine lovers, couples, anyone who wants an easier day than Kazbegi. Not ideal: non-drinkers, although the scenery and Sighnaghi work without the wine. Our private Kakheti wine day trip includes two tastings; the driver doesn't drink.
Mtskheta, Gori and Uplistsikhe: history
Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta, Georgia's old capital, then Uplistsikhe, a town cut into the rock above the Mtkvari, and the Stalin Museum in Gori. About 3.5 hours of driving in total. Uplistsikhe and the Stalin Museum are 15 GEL each for foreign adults [1].
Suits: history lovers, families with school-age children, anyone who wants less time in the car. In July and August, go to Uplistsikhe early: there is almost no shade. See our private Mtskheta, Gori and Uplistsikhe day trip.
David Gareja and Sighnaghi: semi-desert monasteries
The Lavra of David Gareja sits in striped semi-desert hills on the border with Azerbaijan, about two hours from Tbilisi; the last stretch is a rough road. The Lavra is open. The Udabno monastery on the ridge above, with its cave frescoes, is closed or unpredictable because of the border, so don't count on the ridge walk. Most private versions add Sighnaghi and Bodbe on the way back, for a 10–11 hour day.
Suits: travellers who have already seen Kazbegi and Kakheti and want a very different landscape. Season: March–May and September–November. Summer is very hot and vipers are active in the warm months [2].
Vardzia and Borjomi: a very long day
Borjomi's park, Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe and the cave monastery of Vardzia, carved into a cliff in the 12th century. Tbilisi to Vardzia is 4.5–5 hours each way [3], so the day is 13.5–14 hours, with 8–10 of them in the car. Part of Vardzia has been closed since the 27 May 2026 rockfall, and visits now end shortly after the Church of the Dormition.
Suits: travellers who can't add a night and don't mind a long day. If you can, take two days instead and sleep in Akhaltsikhe or near Vardzia.
Northern Armenia: Haghpat and Sanahin
Across the Sadakhlo–Bagratashen border (about 1.5 hours from Tbilisi), you cross on foot, then drive into the Debed canyon for the medieval monasteries of Akhtala, Haghpat and Sanahin. About 11 hours door to door. Bring your passport; check whether you need an Armenian e-visa, and make sure a Georgian visa, if you have one, allows a second entry.
Suits: travellers who want a second country without a second trip, and fans of medieval architecture.
Mtskheta and Château Mukhrani: a half day
Jvari and Svetitskhoveli in Mtskheta (25 km, about 30 minutes from Tbilisi), then a palace and cellar tour with tasting at Château Mukhrani, about 45 km from Tbilisi. It takes 5.5–6 hours and works as a morning or an afternoon.
Suits: your arrival or departure day, or anyone who wants Georgian wine without the long drive to Kakheti.
Which one first?
- One day only: Kazbegi from May to October; Kakheti or Mtskheta–Gori in winter.
- Two days: Kazbegi and Kakheti.
- Three days: add Mtskheta, Gori and Uplistsikhe.
- Four or more: David Gareja, Armenia or a night near Vardzia.
- Don't put two 11-hour days back to back if you can avoid it; a Tbilisi day in between helps.
