Kutaisi Day Trip: Prometheus Cave, Martvili and Okatse Canyons

The short answer: yes, you can see Prometheus Cave, Martvili Canyon and Okatse Canyon in one day from Kutaisi. Prometheus is about 20 km (30–40 minutes) from the city, Martvili about 50 km (1–1.5 hours) and Okatse about 42 km (around an hour), and a loop takes 8–9 hours. The catches are the weather: Okatse closes in rain and snow, and the boats at Martvili and Prometheus stop when the water is high. Gelati Monastery, Kutaisi's only UNESCO World Heritage site, and Sataplia make a second, shorter day.

Getting to Kutaisi

Kutaisi is 3–3.5 hours from Tbilisi since the Rikoti highway was finished in December 2025 [1]. A round trip from Tbilisi to the canyons in one day means 12–13 hours, so we recommend a night in Kutaisi.

Prometheus Cave

Prometheus (Kumistavi) cave was found by speleologists in 1984 and opened to visitors in 2011. The show route is 1,420 m through six lit halls of stalactites, stalagmites and underground pools, and takes about an hour on foot [2]. At the end there is an optional 10–15 minute boat ride along the underground river to the exit, which is cancelled when the water is high [2][3]. The cave stays around 14 °C all year, so bring a light jacket even in August.

Martvili Canyon

Martvili is a narrow limestone gorge with blue-green water and small waterfalls, once the private bathing spot of the Dadiani princes of Samegrelo; their old stone steps are still there [4]. A walking trail of about 700 m runs along the top, and an inflatable boat takes you a short way up the gorge into sections you can't see from the path [4]. The boats run from roughly May to October and stop in spring floods and after heavy rain [4][5]. It is the busiest of the three sites, so an early start helps.

Okatse Canyon

At Okatse a forest trail leads to a 780 m walkway fixed to the cliff, hanging over a gorge that is up to about 100 m deep, and ending at a viewing platform [6][7]. The whole walk takes 2–3 hours [6]. The walkway is closed in rain and snow; the main season is April to November [6]. If heights bother you, you can wait at the start while the others go on.

About 7 km north is the Kinchkha waterfall, a 15-minute drive and roughly 25 minutes' walk each way [7]. On long summer days it sometimes fits in; we can't promise it in advance.

Sataplia and Gelati: the other Kutaisi day

  • Sataplia, just outside Kutaisi, is a small reserve with dinosaur footprints, a karst cave and a glass-floored viewpoint over the city [8]. The glass platform closes in rain and snow. It is also the usual stand-in when Okatse is closed.
  • Gelati Monastery, a few kilometres north-east of Kutaisi, was founded in 1106 by King David IV "the Builder", who is buried at its gate. It was a monastery and an academy, and its main church has a famous 12th-century mosaic of the Virgin and Child [9]. Gelati is Kutaisi's only UNESCO World Heritage site. Expect scaffolding on the main church, where conservation of the roof and frescoes is still going on [9].
  • Bagrati Cathedral stands on a hill in the city and is worth a look at dusk. It is no longer on the World Heritage list: it was removed in 2017 after its reconstruction [10].

Opening days: the Monday question

Several of these sites used to close on Mondays, and many older blogs still say so. In 2026 Prometheus opens daily, with no day off [2], and the Okatse page of the Agency of Protected Areas lists it as open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 [6]. Some sources still say Sataplia runs no tours on Mondays, so check before planning it for a Monday. Hours get shorter from November, when daylight also limits the loop. Entrance fees for foreign visitors went up on 1 April 2026, and many blogs still show the old prices [3].

Which to pick in one day

  • All three (8–9 hours): Martvili first, before the crowds, then Okatse, then Prometheus in the afternoon on the way back to Kutaisi. This is our standard loop, and it involves about 6 km of walking, much of it on steps.
  • A shorter day: Martvili and Prometheus only, about 6–7 hours, if you'd rather not do the Okatse walkway or the weather is wet.
  • With small children: Prometheus and Sataplia are easy and close to town. Children must be at least 6 to walk the Okatse trail [6].
  • History instead: Gelati, Bagrati and Sataplia fill a relaxed half day.

In spring, after rain, expect the boats to be off; in winter, the Okatse walkway may be closed for days at a time.

Where it fits in a trip

Kutaisi works as the turning point of a longer route west: from Tbilisi, via the caves and canyons, to Svaneti or the Black Sea at Batumi. See the western variant of our 7-day Georgia itinerary or, for the coast, our Batumi and Adjara guide.

Tours for the caves and canyons

Our trips are private: your own car and English-speaking driver-guide, for 1–8 travellers. The private Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon day trip from Kutaisi takes about 8.5 hours with Martvili, Okatse (or Sataplia when Okatse is closed) and Prometheus; we tell you on the day what is open and refund any unused boat fee. For a longer route, Western Georgia in 6 days goes from Tbilisi through Prometheus and Martvili to Svaneti and Batumi. See the tour pages for the current price, or build your own route. Nothing to pay now.
