About Prometheus Cave

Prometheus Cave is a large show cave at the village of Kumistavi, about 20 km (30–40 min) north-west of Kutaisi. A guided route of about 1.4 km leads through six lit halls of stalactites, stalagmites, curtains and underground lakes, and ends with a short optional boat ride on the underground Kumi river. The temperature stays around 14 °C all year, so it works in any season and makes a cool break on a hot Imereti day.

The cave is the same in every season, but it is especially welcome in hot July–August; the boat ride is more likely to be suspended after heavy rain in spring, when the river rises.

Foreign adults 40 GEL for the cave (guide included) and 30 GEL for the boat, sold only with an entry ticket (APA tariff); combo tickets with Martvili Canyon or the nearby Navenakhevi cave save money.

Opening hours

Daily, year-round, from 10:00; closing is 18:00 in spring and summer and 17:00 in autumn and winter.

About 1 h on paved walkways with many steps and damp, slippery patches.

History & culture

History

Speleologists discovered the cave system in 1984, and it was fitted with paths, railings and lighting and opened to visitors in 2011 under the name Prometheus, after the Greek myth set in the Caucasus. It is protected as a natural monument and run by the Agency of Protected Areas.
