About Batumi Botanical Garden

Batumi Botanical Garden covers 111 hectares of coastal hills at Mtsvane Kontskhi (Green Cape), about 9 km north of Batumi. Founded in 1912, it is laid out in sections for nine regions of the world, from the Caucasian humid subtropics and East Asia to the Himalayas, New Zealand and the Mediterranean, with bamboo groves, palms, magnolias and views over the Black Sea. Allow 2–3 hours to walk the main route, or use the electric car for the longer stretches.

History & culture

History

The garden was founded in 1912 by the Russian botanist and geographer Andrey Krasnov, who saw that the warm, very wet climate of the Adjarian coast could support subtropical plants from around the world. He collected plants on expeditions to East Asia and elsewhere, and he is buried in the garden. In Soviet times it became a research institute for subtropical plants, and it remains a scientific institution today.

No accommodation inside the garden. Guesthouses and small hotels in Mtsvane Kontskhi and Makhinjauri are within walking distance or a short drive; the full choice is in Batumi, 20 minutes away.
