Kvareli, Nekresi and the Wine Tunnels of Kakheti

Kvareli, at the foot of the Caucasus in Kakheti, has a 7.7 km wine tunnel cut into the mountain, the hillside monastery of Nekresi, Ilia Chavchavadze's birthplace museum and a lake for a walk. Gremi is on the way. What each is like and how to fit them in.

Kvareli, Nekresi and the Wine Tunnels of Kakheti

In short: Kvareli is the wine town at the northern edge of Kakheti's Alazani Valley, right under the Greater Caucasus and about 161 km from Tbilisi [1]. Its sights sit close together: the Khareba wine tunnel, 7.7 km of galleries cut into the mountain [2]; the monastery of Nekresi on a wooded slope nearby [3][4]; the house-museum of the writer Ilia Chavchavadze, who was born here [1]; and Ilia's Lake, a reservoir with a lakeside promenade [5]. The royal citadel of Gremi is on the road from Telavi. Together they make a full day, or the last morning of a longer Kakheti trip.

The Khareba wine tunnel

The tunnel was dug into the mountainside above Kvareli and opened in 1962, for the World Congress of Vine and Wine [2]. Today the Khareba winery uses it as a cellar and visitor centre. It runs to 7.7 km, with two main tunnels and 13 connecting ones, and stays at 12–16 °C all year, which is why it was built: a natural, steady temperature for storing and ageing wine [2].

What to expect:

  • Hours: open daily, 10:00–20:00 [2].
  • Tastings: priced by package, from a short walk with one or two wines up to longer tastings with food. Expect roughly 25–50 GEL for the usual options [6].
  • Masterclasses: bread in a tone oven, churchkhela, khachapuri, and grape crushing in season [2].
  • Outside: a park with a river, a water mill and a restaurant [2].

Be clear about what it is. Khareba is a large producer, and the tunnel is an industrial-scale visit that big coach groups use; some reviewers find the tour thin [6]. It is fun to walk into a mountain, and a good choice on a hot day or with children, but if you want to meet a winemaker and taste qvevri wine at a family table, a small cellar elsewhere in Kakheti gives you more. Kvareli is also the home of Kindzmarauli, the semi-sweet red named after the local micro-zone [1], and the Kindzmarauli Corporation winery in town offers short tastings.

Nekresi Monastery

Nekresi stands on the northern slope of the Gombori range between Kvareli and the village of Shilda, at about 480 m, among woods with a wide view over the Alazani Valley [4]. It is one of the oldest Christian sites in Georgia. Georgian chronicles credit King Trdat (r. 394–406) with building a church here, and the small church on site is dated to the 4th century [3][4]. In the 6th century Abibos of Nekresi, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers who spread monasticism in eastern Georgia, settled here [3].

The complex includes the 6th–7th-century basilica of the Nativity of the Virgin, the Church of the Archangels (8th–9th century), a bishop's palace, a tower and a later church of St George [4]. Excavations since 1984 have also found the remains of a Zoroastrian fire temple and a large stone winery with five wine presses from Late Antiquity [3], proof that wine was made here on a big scale long before the tunnels. The monastery declined after the Arab invasions of the 8th century but kept going as a bishop's seat, and it has been active again since 2000 [3].

Local legend says that when Lezgin raiders came from over the mountains, the people slaughtered pigs and spilled their blood around the walls to keep them away; the story lives on in the Nekresoba festival on 7 January [4].

Getting up: cars are not allowed on the last stretch. You leave the car at the bottom of the hill, and a minibus shuttles visitors up the steep, winding road for a small fee; it runs in the main season, from about mid-April to mid-December [7]. Outside those months, or if you prefer, you can walk up. Dress code: shoulders and knees covered, and women cover their hair.

Ilia Chavchavadze and his museum

Ilia Chavchavadze (1837–1907), writer, publisher and the leading figure of the 19th-century Georgian national movement, was born in Kvareli [1]. The Georgian Church canonised him as St Ilia the Righteous. The family property, with its defensive tower and house, has been a museum since 1937 and holds more than a thousand items connected to him and his times [8]. It is usually closed on Mondays [8]; allow 45 minutes.

Ilia's Lake

Just outside town is Ilia's Lake, a man-made reservoir at about 430 m, named after the writer [5]. It is used for irrigation, and one side has been turned into a recreation area with a lakeside boulevard, a cycle path, restaurants and a hotel [5]. It is not a sight in itself, but it is a pleasant place for a walk or coffee between the tunnel and the museum, with forest on one side and the mountains behind.

Gremi on the way

On the road from Telavi to Kvareli, the citadel of Gremi rises on a hill: the 16th-century church and royal tower of the old capital of Kakheti, built under King Levan and destroyed by Shah Abbas's armies in 1615. The small museum in the tower and the view from its top are worth 45 minutes. Our guide to Telavi, Alaverdi and Gremi has the full story.

How to plan it

  • As a day from Tbilisi: over the Gombori pass to Gremi, Nekresi, the tunnel and the museum, then back: a long 10–11 hour day.
  • From Telavi: Kvareli is a short drive, so a half day from a Telavi base covers Gremi, Nekresi and the tunnel easily.
  • With Tsinandali: the estate at Tsinandali, home of Prince Alexander Chavchavadze, pairs naturally with Kvareli; see our Tsinandali estate guide.

In December the vines are bare, but the tunnel, churches and museums are open and the valley is quiet. The Gombori pass can be icy in winter, when drivers take the lower Sagarejo road.
