The short answer: two days is the right amount of time for Kazbegi. On day one you drive the Georgian Military Highway from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda (152 km, 3–3.5 hours without stops), stopping at Ananuri and the Jvari Pass, and go up to Gergeti Trinity Church in the evening light. On day two you walk in the Truso or Juta valley, or take the short path to the Gveleti waterfall, and drive back to Tbilisi in the afternoon. It turns a rushed 11–12 hour day trip into a relaxed weekend.
Why stay the night?
A Kazbegi day trip works, but it is 6–7 hours in the car for a few hours at the top. Staying one night in Stepantsminda gives you three things a day trip can't: Gergeti Trinity (2,170 m) in the late afternoon or at sunrise, when the coach groups have gone; a fresh morning for a proper walk; and a slower drive with time at every stop. On a clear evening Mount Kazbek (5,054 m) turns pink above the church, and you are there to see it.
Day 1: the Military Highway and Gergeti at sunset
Leave Tbilisi around 09:00. With stops, the drive takes 6–7 hours, so you reach Stepantsminda in mid-afternoon. The classic stops, in order:
- Jvari Monastery above Mtskheta, for the view over the meeting of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers.
- Zhinvali reservoir viewpoint, a quick photo stop.
- Ananuri fortress, about 70 km from Tbilisi: two churches inside walls above the water. Allow 45 minutes.
- Pasanauri for a khinkali lunch; the dumplings are said to come from these valleys.
- The Friendship Monument viewpoint past Gudauri, then the Jvari Pass (2,379 m), the highest point of the road.
Check in at Stepantsminda, rest for an hour, then go up to Gergeti Trinity in the early evening. In season a sealed road reaches the church and an ordinary car drives up in about 15–20 minutes. If you would rather walk, the path from town takes 1–1.5 hours up; our Gergeti Trinity Church hike guide covers the route. Sunset moves a lot through the year, as Georgia keeps the same clock all year: roughly 20:40 in late June and about 18:00 in late October. Bring a warm layer; it is often about 10 °C cooler than Tbilisi.
Day 2: Truso, Juta or Gveleti
Pick one, depending on the season and how much you want to walk.
Truso valley (May–October)
A local 4x4 drives the dirt track to Kvemo Okrokana, where the border police register every visitor, so bring your passport. From there it is about 3 hours on a nearly flat track to the orange travertines and the Abano mineral lake and back. It is the gentler choice and suits most walkers.
Juta valley (July–September)
Juta is the one for the Chaukhi spires above a meadow. The walk is about 5 hours in total with 360–400 m of climbing. Since a collapse in June 2025 the last 2.6 km of the road from Sno has been closed to cars, which adds a walk or a village-taxi ride; we check the current status before each date. Juta makes the later return to Tbilisi.
Gveleti waterfall (May–October, easy option)
If you don't want a long hike, drive about 8 km north of Stepantsminda towards the Dariali gorge and walk 30–40 minutes each way on a rocky path to the falls. Combine it with a morning return to Gergeti if you only saw it in cloud the evening before.
Can't decide? Our comparison of Truso or Juta valley goes through who each one suits. Whichever you choose, leave Stepantsminda around 15:00 and you are back at your Tbilisi hotel between about 17:30 and 19:00. Weekend traffic and truck queues from the Upper Lars border can add time.
Where to stay
Stay in Stepantsminda itself, at about 1,740 m, or in the villages close by, such as Gergeti across the river. The town has everything from family guesthouses to larger hotels with a view of Kazbek; a room facing the mountain is worth asking for. Guesthouses often serve a home-cooked dinner, which is useful because the choice of restaurants is small outside summer. Book ahead for July, August and September weekends.
When to go
- June to September: the easiest months. Both valleys are open (Juta from July), the road is reliable and the evenings are long.
- May and October: quieter and cooler. Truso and Gveleti usually work; Juta's upper meadows may have snow.
- July and August are the busiest, especially at weekends.
The winter version
From December to March, Kazbegi is snowy and very quiet, and two days still work, with changes. The Jvari Pass can close for hours or for 1–3 days after heavy snow, so keep your plans flexible and don't book a flight home the same evening. Truso and Juta are out of reach for walkers in winter. Instead, the second day becomes a short snow walk around Stepantsminda, a look into the Dariali gorge, and a stop in Gudauri on the way back. The road to Gergeti Trinity may not be cleared after snowfall; then a local 4x4 is the way up, and on some days not even that. We check the road the evening before and suggest another route if the pass is shut.
What to bring
- A warm layer and a rain jacket, even in August.
- Walking shoes with grip for Truso, Juta or Gveleti.
- Your passport (Truso) and cash in lari for lunches and small shops.
- Travel insurance: since 1 January 2026 it is mandatory for visitors, with at least 30,000 GEL of cover. We don't take guests onto the Gergeti glacier, which needs ropes and a mountain guide.
Tours for this: Kazbegi overnight
Our private Kazbegi overnight with a Truso or Juta hike follows this plan: the Highway stops on day one, Gergeti in the evening light, dinner at the hotel, and a valley walk with a local 4x4 and hiking guide on day two (May–October). For more action, the 3-day Kazbegi adventure weekend adds rafting on the Aragvi and a paragliding slot in Gudauri. Short of time, the Kazbegi and Gergeti private day trip does the highlights in one long day.
