Gergeti Trinity Church Hike: Trail, Time and Tips

The short answer: the hike from Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) up to Gergeti Trinity Church is about 7 km there and back, with roughly 430 m of climbing from the town at 1,740 m to the church at 2,170 m [1][2]. A fit walker takes 60–75 minutes up and about 90 minutes down; allow 3.5–4 hours in total with time at the church [1]. It is steep in places but needs no technical skill. If you would rather not walk, a sealed road goes up in season and you can drive.

The trail

The walk starts in the centre of Stepantsminda. You cross the river into the village of Gergeti and climb through its lanes until the houses end and the path starts up the hillside. From there the route most people recommend follows a stream on the left-hand side of the slope and reaches the church from the south, through open meadows with the church on the ridge ahead [1]. An alternative uses the road and a steep path through the forest on the right-hand side; it is shorter but less pleasant, and you share part of it with cars [1].

  • Distance: about 7 km return [1].
  • Climb: roughly 430 m from town to the church.
  • Time: 60–75 minutes up for a fit walker, up to 1.5 hours at an easy pace; about 90 minutes down [1].
  • Surface: village lanes, then a dirt path that is steep, stony and slippery after rain. The descent is harder on the knees than the climb.

The trail is used every day in season, and on clear mornings you will not be alone on it. Bring water and a snack.

At the top

The church of the Holy Trinity was built in the 14th century on a ridge at 2,170 m, with a separate bell tower beside it, and Mt Kazbek (5,054 m) behind [2]. It is still a working church. The view down to Stepantsminda and along the valley towards the Dariali gorge is as good as the view of the church itself. Clouds often build up around Kazbek by late morning in summer, so an early start gives you a better chance of seeing the peak.

Dress code

Men should not wear shorts. Women should wear a long skirt and cover their hair; wrap skirts are available at the entrance [1]. Shoulders should be covered for everyone.

The alternative: drive up

A sealed road climbs from Stepantsminda to a car park just below the church. Outside winter, ordinary cars can use it [2]. If you arrive by marshrutka, local 4x4 drivers wait in town and charge roughly 15–25 GEL per person or 60–100 GEL per car for the return trip, including about 30 minutes at the top [1][3]. Many people drive up and walk down, which gives you the views without the climb.

In snow the road needs a 4x4 and on some days it is impassable. For getting to Stepantsminda in the first place, see Tbilisi to Kazbegi: marshrutka, taxi or private driver.

Going further: towards the Gergeti glacier

A trail continues from behind the church up the ridge towards the Gergeti glacier and Mt Kazbek. The full walk to the glacier and back is around 20 km with many more hours of uphill walking [1], and the foot of the glacier is at about 3,300 m. Beyond the moraine the route crosses a crevassed glacier, which needs a rope team and a qualified mountain guide.

Walking some of the way up the ridge behind the church, for a view of the glacier and Kazbek, is a good half-day in summer if you are fit and the weather is settled. Do it only with a local hiking guide: the path is not well marked above the church, and the weather changes quickly at this altitude. We do not take guests onto the glacier itself. If you want to walk further than the church, tell us when you plan your trip and we will tell you what is realistic for the date.

Weather and season

  • May–June: green meadows and snow still on Kazbek; May is a good month for the walk [1].
  • July–August: the busiest months. Start early for clearer views and cooler air.
  • September–October: clear, crisp mornings and golden slopes, with cold evenings.
  • November–February: a high chance of snow and ice on the path [1]. Walk up only with proper boots and, ideally, traction devices, or go by 4x4 when the road is open. The Jvari Pass on the way from Tbilisi can close after snow.

Gergeti is often about 10 °C cooler than Tbilisi, and it can be windy on the ridge. Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket even in summer, plus sunglasses and sunscreen: the sun is strong at this height.

Tips

  • Sunrise: the light on the church at dawn is beautiful. Sunrise is around 05:30 in June and 06:40 in mid-September; you will need a head torch for the path.
  • Shoes: trainers are fine in dry weather; boots with grip are better after rain.
  • Altitude: 2,170 m is not high enough to worry most people, but you will feel the climb if you have come straight up from Tbilisi.
  • Day trip or overnight: on a day trip from Tbilisi (11–12 hours), walking up adds 1–1.5 hours to an already long day. With a night in Stepantsminda, you can walk up at sunrise or in the evening light, when it is quieter.
