The short answer: the classic photos of Georgia are Gergeti Trinity Church under Mt Kazbek, Ananuri fortress above the Zhinvali reservoir, Tbilisi's Old Town from Narikala, and the stone towers of Mestia and Ushguli in Svaneti. The light matters as much as the place: mountains are usually clearest in the morning, and several viewpoints face the sun only at one end of the day. Here are twelve spots, with when to be there.
Kazbegi and the Military Highway
1. Gergeti Trinity Church at sunrise
The 14th-century church stands at 2,170 m on a ridge above Stepantsminda, with Mt Kazbek (5,054 m) behind it. At sunrise the first light reaches the church and the mountain while the valley is still in shade. Kazbek is usually clearest in the morning; in summer, cloud often builds after midday. For sunrise you need a night in Stepantsminda: from Tbilisi it is 152 km and 3–3.5 hours each way. The church grounds open at about 9:00, so early shots are taken from the ridge and the path. Photos are not allowed inside, and drones are banned at the church.
2. Ananuri fortress and its reflection
The 17th-century fortress, about 70 km from Tbilisi, sits on the edge of the turquoise Zhinvali reservoir. The reflection needs still water, which is likeliest early in the morning, and the level of the reservoir changes through the year. Climb the tower inside the walls for the view over the water.
3. The Friendship Monument above the Devil's Valley
Just past Gudauri, this semicircular concrete viewpoint from 1983 has a long tiled mosaic inside and a sheer drop into the valley below. Paragliders often launch nearby in summer. Go on a clear day; in cloud you see nothing beyond the railing.
4. The Truso travertines
In the Truso valley, reached by a 4x4 track near Kobi, mineral springs have left terraces of orange, red and white crust beside the river. Soft, overcast light shows the colours better than hard midday sun. Truso is about a May–October walk, and the border police check passports at the entrance.
5. The Chaukhi peaks from Juta
The jagged Chaukhi massif above the meadows of Juta is the "Georgian Dolomites" photo. It is a July–September walk; in July the meadows are full of wildflowers. The peaks sit at the head of the valley, so a clear morning gives you sharp outlines. Since June 2025 the last 2.6 km of the road has been closed to cars, so plan on extra walking. Our Truso or Juta guide compares the two walks.
Tbilisi and around
6. The Old Town from Narikala
The cable car from Rike Park takes you up to Narikala fortress and the Mother of Georgia statue, with the Old Town's roofs, wooden balconies, the sulphur-bath domes and the river below. Late afternoon light is warm, and after sunset, at blue hour, the Bridge of Peace and the churches are lit. The cobbles on the way down are steep and polished, which is harder in the dark; wear shoes with grip.
7. Mtskheta from Jvari Monastery
From the 6th-century Jvari Monastery on its hilltop you look down on the meeting of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers and the old capital, Mtskheta, with Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in the middle. The town lies to the west of the hill, so morning light falls on it; by late afternoon you are shooting into the sun. Mtskheta is 25 km and about 30 minutes from Tbilisi.
8. Uplistsikhe
The rock-cut town above the Mtkvari near Gori is bare sandstone with almost no shade. Low sun in the early morning or late afternoon brings out the carved halls and textures; at midday in July and August the light is flat and the heat is fierce. Check the seasonal opening hours before planning a late visit.
Kakheti and the south-east
9. Sighnaghi at sunset
Sighnaghi's walls and towers look out across the Alazani Valley to the Greater Caucasus. In the late afternoon and at sunset the light falls across the valley onto the mountains; on a hazy summer day the peaks may not show at all, so spring and autumn are more reliable. April brings blossom; September and October bring the grape harvest.
10. The hills at David Gareja
The Lavra monastery sits in striped semi-desert hills on the Azerbaijani border. In March–May the hills are green and flowering; in summer they are brown and very hot. The Lavra is open; the Udabno monastery and ridge path above, with the famous views over the coloured hills, are closed or unpredictable because of the border. It is a working monastery, so ask before photographing the monks.
Svaneti
11. Mestia's towers
Mestia's medieval Svan defensive towers stand among the houses of the town, with Ushba and Tetnuldi in the views around it. The towers look their most dramatic in the evening, and the Hatsvali chairlift above town gives you a view over the whole valley. The Svaneti Museum in Mestia is closed on Mondays.
12. Ushguli and Shkhara
Ushguli, one of Europe's highest villages, is 47 km beyond Mestia, with the 12th-century Lamaria church above the village and Shkhara, Georgia's highest mountain, behind. As at Kazbegi, the high peaks are usually clearest in the morning, so an overnight in Ushguli, or an early start from Mestia, makes it more likely you will see Shkhara without cloud. June to September is the main season; from autumn, snow can close the road for spells.
Seasons at a glance
- Spring (March–May): blossom in Tbilisi and Kakheti, green hills at David Gareja, snow still on the peaks.
- Summer (June–August): the mountains are open, with wildflowers from late June, but haze and midday cloud are common. Shoot early.
- Autumn (September–October): clearer air, harvest scenes in Kakheti, and gold and red slopes in Kazbegi and Svaneti.
- Winter (December–March): snowy Gergeti when the Jvari Pass is open, and short days.
Etiquette and drones
- Churches: photography inside is often not allowed, including at Gergeti; look for signs or ask. Dress for them either way.
- People: ask before photographing people, especially monks, priests and older villagers. A gesture towards the camera and a smile usually works.
- Drones: Georgia's Civil Aviation Agency runs an online registration system for drone operators, and you label the drone with your registration number [1]. Flying in restricted, prohibited or dangerous areas without authorisation is not permitted; the zones are listed on the official airspace site [1][2]. Drones are also banned at Gergeti. Avoid flying near borders, military sites and in the border-police areas such as Truso and David Gareja without checking first.
Photo trips with us
With a private car you stop where the light is, not where the bus stops. The private Kazbegi and Gergeti day trip covers Ananuri, the Friendship Monument and Gergeti; for sunrise at Gergeti, the 2-day Kazbegi overnight puts you in Stepantsminda for the evening and the morning. The Svaneti highland expedition, 5-day private tour includes a night in Ushguli, and the private Tbilisi city walk takes the cable car to Narikala. Tell us you are photographing and we plan the times around the light. See each tour page for the current price, or build your own photo route. Nothing to pay now.
