The short answer: if you have five days, Georgia Highlights covers the three things most first-timers want: Tbilisi, the Kakheti wine country and the mountains at Kazbegi. With eight days, Classic Georgia adds Borjomi and the cave town of Vardzia at a steadier pace. With ten, the Grand Tour carries on to Kutaisi and the Black Sea at Batumi. Two shorter options suit particular travellers: Heart of Georgia for history lovers and Romantic Georgia for couples. Here is how they compare.
The five tours at a glance
- Romantic Georgia for Two, 4 days: Tbilisi, a night at Kazbegi, a night in Sighnaghi.
- Georgia Highlights, 5 days: Tbilisi, Kakheti, a night at Kazbegi, Uplistsikhe and Gori.
- Heart of Georgia, 5 days: Tbilisi's museum, Mtskheta, Uplistsikhe, Kutaisi, Kakheti. No high mountains.
- Classic Georgia, 8 days: Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kazbegi, Uplistsikhe, Borjomi, Vardzia, Kakheti.
- Grand Tour of Georgia, 10 days: everything in Classic, plus Kutaisi, Prometheus cave and Batumi.
All five are private: your own car and English-speaking driver-guide, for 1–8 travellers, and every day can be adjusted.
Georgia Highlights in 5 days
The most compact way to see the country's range. Day one is arrival and the Old Town with a welcome dinner; day two is a Kakheti loop to Bodbe, Sighnaghi, Tsinandali and a family qvevri cellar; day three drives the Military Highway via Mtskheta and Ananuri to Stepantsminda, with Gergeti Trinity in the late afternoon and a night in the mountains; day four comes back over the Jvari Pass to Uplistsikhe and Gori. Day five is free until your flight.
Suits: a first trip with limited leave, or a short stop on a longer journey. The catch: days two and four each have about 5 hours of driving. Season: April to November; from December to March the Jvari Pass can close, and we then swap the order or replace Kazbegi with Mtskheta and Château Mukhrani.
Classic Georgia in 8 days
Eight days lets you slow down and add the south. After two days in Tbilisi and Mtskheta, you spend a night at Kazbegi, then drive via Uplistsikhe and Gori to Borjomi, visit Vardzia, Khertvisi fortress and Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe, and finish with a Kakheti wine day and a farewell dinner.
Suits: most first-timers who can take a week or more; it is the trip we recommend if you are unsure. The catch: two long drive days (about 5 hours each), and Vardzia is not what it was: part of the visitor path has been closed since the 27 May 2026 rockfall, so you see roughly half the complex. Read what's open at Vardzia in 2026 before you decide. Season: April to October, with March and November on request.
Grand Tour of Georgia in 10 days
The Grand Tour follows Classic Georgia's route, then turns west: Gelati Monastery in Kutaisi, Prometheus cave, and a day in Batumi with Gonio fortress and the Botanical Garden, before an evening train back to Tbilisi (or you fly home from Batumi).
Suits: travellers who want mountains, wine, history and the sea in one trip, and don't mind a lot of moving. The catch: seven different beds in ten days, and the sea is too cold for swimming before June. Season: May to October, April on request.
Heart of Georgia in 5 days
A heritage tour without high mountains: the Georgian National Museum and Old Tbilisi, Mtskheta's Jvari and Svetitskhoveli, Uplistsikhe and Gori, then Kutaisi, where Gelati is the only UNESCO World Heritage site, and Motsameta. It ends with Alaverdi, Tsinandali, a night in Sighnaghi and Bodbe.
Suits: history and church lovers, and anyone travelling in winter, because it doesn't cross the Jvari Pass. It runs all year. The catch: day two is long, about 270 km with three sites.
Romantic Georgia for Two in 4 days
A short, slower trip for couples: Tbilisi with a private bath room, a boutique night in Stepantsminda with Gergeti at sunset and again at sunrise, then a wine tasting on Sighnaghi's walls before sunset and dinner for two. Day four is Bodbe and the airport.
Suits: honeymoons, anniversaries and long weekends. The catch: day three starts at sunrise and has 5–5.5 hours in the car. Season: April to November; from December to March the mountain night becomes a wine-spa night in Kakheti.
How to choose
- Count your full days on the ground, not your nights. A late arrival and an early flight take a day off each end.
- Decide how you feel about driving. Georgia is small but mountain roads are slow; the longer tours have fewer long days per week.
- Check the season. Kazbegi is at its easiest from June to September; winter trips work, but keep Heart of Georgia or a flexible plan in mind.
- Think about what you would skip. If caves and steps don't appeal, a trip without Vardzia is no loss.

Or build your own
None of these is fixed. You can drop Gori, add a Truso valley walk, stay two nights in Kakheti or finish in Batumi. Use our tour builder to pick the places and the number of days, and we send a private route with a price.
Tours for a first trip
Start with Georgia Highlights in 5 days if time is short, the Classic Georgia 8-day private tour if you can take a week, or the Grand Tour of Georgia in 10 days to reach the Black Sea. The Heart of Georgia and Romantic Georgia for Two tour pages have the full day-by-day plans for those two. Prices depend on season and group size, so see the tour page for the current price. Or build your own trip. Nothing to pay now.
