About Truso Valley
A high valley west of Kobi at the head of the Terek, with mineral springs, orange-white travertine terraces, the Zakagori fortress and the ruins of abandoned villages. Most visitors walk or ride a 4x4 along the mostly flat valley road; the upper valley ends at the occupation line of the Tskhinvali region.
Travel Tips
About 22 km return on a dirt road; the travertines and Ketrisi are about 8 km in. A 4x4 taxi from Stepantsminda costs about 80-100 GEL return. Carry your passport: a free border-zone check by the military is needed beyond Zakagori. Do not approach the occupation line.

Caucasus 4x4: Tusheti, Khevsureti & Kazbegi — 8-Day Private Expedition
Eight days in the three mountain regions of Georgia where you really need a 4x4: Kazbegi's Truso or Juta valley, Khevsureti with the fortress villages of Shatili and Mutso over the Datvisjvari pass, and Tusheti over the Abano pass (about 2,850 m). There is no road between Khevsureti and Tusheti, so the route returns to a night in Telavi between them. Our own 4x4 with an English-speaking driver-guide (Russian-speaking on request) covers days 1–5 and the drive home from Kvemo Alvani on day 8; for Tusheti a local licensed jeep driver takes over, because only local drivers drive the Abano road, and only in daylight and dry weather. Nights are in hotels in Stepantsminda and Telavi and in mountain guesthouses with half board in Shatili and Tusheti. Days 3 and 5 are long mountain drives. July to 20 September; we recommend a spare day before your flight home.
Kazbegi Adventure Weekend: Rafting, Hiking & Paragliding — 3 Days, Private
Three active days on one mountain road north of Tbilisi. Day one: rafting the White Aragvi at Pasanauri with a licensed crew, a stop at Ananuri, and the first paragliding slot at Gudauri if the wind allows. Day two: a guided hike in the Juta valley (July–September) or the Truso valley (May–June and September), reached by local 4x4. Day three: Gergeti Trinity at sunrise and a tandem paragliding flight at Gudauri with a licensed pilot before the drive back. Flights depend on the weather, so there are two slots; if neither flies we refund the flight. We never plan the flight for the day before your international departure. Two nights in Stepantsminda are included. This is soft adventure: no experience needed, but insurance must cover rafting and paragliding.
Kazbegi & Truso Valley by 4x4 — Private Day Trip from Tbilisi
The Military Highway to Kazbegi with a detour most day trips skip: the Truso valley, reached by 4x4 on a dirt road from Kvemo Okrokana. You walk about 4 km among mineral springs, orange-white travertine terraces and abandoned towers, then drive on to Stepantsminda and up to Gergeti Trinity Church (2,170 m). The whole day is in a private 4x4 with an English-speaking driver-guide (Russian-speaking on request). It is a long day of 12–12.5 hours. Beyond Zakagori fortress the valley is a border zone with a free military check, so bring your passport; we stay well inside the permitted area. Runs June to October.
Kazbegi Overnight with Truso or Juta Valley Hike — 2 Days, Private
Two days in the Kazbegi mountains with the night in Stepantsminda, so you see Gergeti Trinity Church in the evening light and still have a full morning for a real walk. Day one follows the Military Highway past Ananuri and the Friendship Monument and over the Jvari Pass (2,379 m). On day two you choose a valley, reached by local 4x4 and walked with a local hiking guide. Truso (May–October) is a mostly flat walk of 2–3 hours to travertine springs and abandoned towers; bring your passport for the free border-zone check. Juta (July–September) is a 3-hour walk with 360–400 m of climbing towards the Chaukhi peaks. A hotel night with breakfast and dinner is included. We never take guests onto the Gergeti glacier, which needs ropes and a mountain guide.
