A glacier valley a short drive from Mestia, reached by an easy forest walk from a suspension bridge. The trail ends at a viewpoint below the glacier snout, where rockfall is a real danger.
Travel Tips
Free. Stay back from the ice: rockfall near the snout has injured and killed people. A border post may check passports. Construction traffic uses the valley road.

Svaneti: Mestia & Ushguli — 5-Day Private Tour
Five days in Upper Svaneti, a UNESCO-listed highland region of Svan tower houses built mostly between the 9th and 13th centuries. The hard part is getting there, so we solve it: you take the morning train from Tbilisi to Zugdidi and a Mestia-based driver-guide drives you up, and in summer you leave over the Zagari pass to Kutaisi instead of repeating the long road. In Mestia you walk towards the Chalaadi glacier (we stay well back from the ice because of rockfall) and can walk to the Koruldi lakes at 2,740 m after a 4x4 ride to the Mestia Cross. Then you spend a night in Ushguli, one of Europe's highest permanently inhabited villages (about 2,100 m), beneath Mt Shkhara (5,193 m), Georgia's highest peak. Four nights, the train ticket and all 4x4 legs are included.
