The Czech Republic lies at the very heart of Europe, in a basin ringed by border mountains. Bordering Germany, Poland, Austria and Slovakia and a member of the European Union since 2004, it unites the historic regions of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. Its largest river is the Vltava, and its highest point is Mount Sněžka at 1,602 m.

The best-known sights — the historic centre of Prague, Kutná Hora, Český Krumlov, Telč, the Lednice–Valtice complex, Kroměříž and Holašovice — are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The border mountains are favourites for summer tourism and winter sports, while the pond-dotted scenery of South Bohemia invites long, romantic walks.
