About Vashlovani National Park
Georgia's semi-desert national park in the far south-east, with badland canyons, the Takhti-Tepa mud volcanoes, pistachio woodland and a chance of goitered gazelles. There are no proper roads: it is a 4x4 trip with nights in park bungalows.
Travel Tips
Fee 5 GEL per person plus 5 GEL per car, cash. The Mijniskure area on the Alazani river needs a free permit from the Border Police in Dedoplistskaro. Mijniskure bungalows about 40 GEL a night, camping 5 GEL. Tracks become impassable after rain, and the park may close in extreme heat.

Georgia's semi-desert, in the far south-east near the Azerbaijan border: canyons, badlands, mud volcanoes and, with luck, goitered gazelles. The park has no proper roads, so the whole trip is by 4x4. In Dedoplistskaro we pick up the free Border Police permit for the Alazani river area and pay the park fees, then drive to Pantishara canyon and the Takhti-Tepa mud volcanoes and on to the park bungalows at Mijniskure. Day two covers Eagle canyon and the old Shiraki airfield before the 170 km drive back. Spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November) only: summer is too hot, and after rain the tracks can be impassable.
