Birtvisi was once called impregnable, and one scramble through its natural rock labyrinth shows you why. On this challenging day trek your guide leads you between towering cliffs and narrow passages in the Algeti country of Kvemo Kartli, the same maze that defeated medieval armies. You'll use your hands as well as your feet on the steeper sections, so a decent level of fitness pays off. The day also takes in dramatic Dashbashi Canyon and the historic fortress at Dmanisi, home to one of the world's oldest human fossil sites. An eight-day 4x4 expedition the length and breadth of Georgia, off the tarmac and onto the mountain tracks. From Tbilisi you cross to Bakuriani via Manglisi and the volcanic Lake Tabatskuri, climb to the Vardzia cave city and Rabati Castle at Akhaltsikhe, then push west through Kutaisi and up the Enguri gorge to the Svan towers of Mestia and Ushguli.
